About Us
Why a Repair Café?
As a society, we throw away vast numbers of household items everyday. Many of these could get a new lease of life after a simple repair. The trouble is, lots of people no longer feel empowered to repair things themselves. This is undermining a sustainable future for the planet and is increasing the economic burden on households.
That’s why there’s an International Repair Café Movement! Worldwide there are over 2,500 Repair Cafés. People are using their repair skills to fix items and pass on this invaluable practical knowledge. Items are being used for longer and don’t have to be thrown away and replaced. This reduces the rate at which raw materials and energy are used to make new products. This in turn reduces greenhouse gas emissions because manufacturing new products and recycling old ones causes CO2 to be released.
As well as building enthusiasm for a sustainable society, the Repair Café Network wants to show how much fun repairing things can be, and how easy it often is. Why don’t you give it a go?
Information is collected about the items brought to the Café and entered into the Repair Monitor. The Repair Monitor is the tool to collect and share repair data with other cafes, product manufacturers and governments across the world. The goal: more repairable products that fit in with the circular economy being brought to market. By attending the Repair Café, in addition to getting your item repaired, you are adding to the wealth of knowledge being used to further the Right to Repair agenda with manufacturers and governments around the world.
